The Lifting Tower
A sympathetic refurbishment of the Grade II Listed wagon lifting tower has brought renewed purpose to this historic structure, incorporating a green roof, timber conservation and stone repairs. Situated in the heart of Tower Square and surrounded by modern office buildings, the restored tower now stands as a striking contrast between heritage and contemporary development.
The structure has been fully glazed, with new sills added to the two large arches where trains once approached. A Millboard walkway now runs through the building allowing public access and celebrating the tower’s historical significance. Display cabinets and information boards have been integrated to share information about the tower’s industrial roots, complemented by a striking external lighting scheme.

Darwin House
We under took a comprehensive refurbishment of the ground floor at Darwin House, delivering:
• A new reception area;
• Gym, toilets and shower facilities;
• A Café space;
• Cat-A office accommodation
•Glazed screens and bespoke joinery elements, including: the reception desk,frames, doors and a feature walkway installation
The works included demolition of existing stud and block walls, full mechanical and electrical strip out, and refurbishment. The walkway was originally to be constructed from a series of solid oak goalposts. This was value-engineered,using the expertise of our joinery workshop, and replaced with light weight expanded foam clad in oak veneers, maintaining the aesthetic while reducing the cost.
As the building remained occupied throughout, with tenants on both the ground and upper floors, we implemented robust measures to ensure safe access and maintain a secure, compliant working environment. This allowed daily operations to continue uninterrupted during the programme of works.
Little Ribston
Simpson and Thompson Architecture collaborated on a joint venture to deliver a high-quality residential development in the village of Little Ribston. The project comprised four detached 4- and 5-bedroom homes, each constructed in natural stone with either slate or pan tile roofing, creating a traditional aesthetic that complemented the local vernacular.
Each property was finished to an exceptional standard, featuring high-end interior specifications throughout.
The project was undertaken during the COVID-19 pandemic and completed within approximately one year. All homes were sold swiftly during and completion, reflecting the quality and desirability of the development.
Harcourt Gardens Care Home
Simpson constructed a new, high-specification development comprising a 108-bed care home and care suite, featuring specialist dementia and respite care units alongside assisted living properties. The care home spans two buildings, each offering three floors of accommodation.
Amenities include a spa, salon, theatre, kitchen and laundry facilities, all located in the basement, along with dedicated parking and a plant room.
From the beginning of the two-stage approach, the Client required a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ across all phases, with the project being registered for design and construction separately. We ensured this remained a focus throughout the project and the required outcome was achieved.
