University of York
Simpson has delivered a range of projects at the University of York, including:
- Central Hall – A major refurbishment of a landmark building, centrally located on campus.
- Integrated Global Atmospheric Chemistry Laboratory (IGAC) – A purpose-built facility providing an experimental, infrastructure laboratory, including offices, meeting rooms and an IT suite.
- Derwent J Block – Refurbishment of student accommodation, offices, welfare facilities and student reception
- Eleanor and Guy Dodson building – an Advanced Structural Imaging facility. The building accommodates two double-height laboratories equipped with enhanced specialist capabilities. Due to the sensitivity of the equipment installed, the facility had to meet strict performance criteria. To ensure compliance, we carried out environmental, vibration and acoustic background monitoring tests during the pre-construction phase, enabling the design and build to meet all technical standards.

All works were carried out while the campus remained fully operational. We coordinated working hours to minimise disruption, particularly in proximity to teaching spaces and student accommodation. Noise monitoring was conducted throughout to ensure minimal impact on students and staff.
York St John University
We have worked with York St John on many projects over the years, including:
- Sports Pavilion - Extension of the existing facility
- Refurbishment of Temple Hall – Provision of a modern lecture theatre with retractable seating, alongside new teaching and laboratory spaces.
- Renovation of the Listed Holgate building – Restoration of the structure, alongside the construction of a contemporary, two-storey glazed extension to accommodate staff and refectory facilities.
- Library alterations - Adaptation of existing space to create a library for the NHS Foundation Trust library
- Fountains Learning Centre – Refurbishment and remodelling of a three-storey building, including a library, reading rooms, offices and an IT suite.
All works were delivered within a live campus setting, requiring close collaboration with the University to minimise disruption to students, staff and visitors.
NHS Framework
Simpson delivered several projects for York Hospital NHS Foundation Trust under a framework agreement. Following the conclusion of the framework, we continued to work with the Trust on further schemes. The framework encompassed both major capital works and ongoing maintenance, including:
- Multiple ward refurbishments
- MRI suite extension and alterations
- Histopathology extension and alterations
- Ward sluices and kitchen upgrades
- Physiotherapy and GP access improvements
A notable project was the refurbishment of the Accident and Emergency department. Delivered in four phases, the scheme included external works, a new GP direct access route, and upgraded access control and refurbishment of the observation ward.
Throughout all projects, we maintained close coordination with the Trust’s engineering team to ensure uninterrupted operation of critical life support services and minimal disruption to adjacent wards and departments.
